Rise of Chomsky
Chomsky's original work on generative grammar in 1950s, which he worked on as a PhD student at UPenn, started the modern field of linguistics. However, the event that pushed Chomsky to academic prominence was his detailed takedown of BF Skinner's work on behavioral linguistics. Chomsky's rebuttal of Skinner's work is still considered one of the most effective academic rebuttals ever written.
