Maurice Olley and the Science of Vehicle Dynamics
The Birth of Vehicle Dynamics
Maurice Olley and his compatriots across the automotive industry are the fathers of Vehicle Dynamics Engineering. Maurice Olley’s interest spanned engineering mechanics of vehicle performance, driver behavior, road design and the social impact of internal combustion vehicles. His clarity of thought, elegant sketches, practical testing and straight forward mathematical calculations explain many of the aspects of vehicle dynamics. He recognized that vehicle dynamics needs to be examined from individual separate system points of view that ultimately, collectively produce a well-behaved vehicle. He examinations included suspension kinematics, tire characterization, vehicle vibration, suspension/steering compliance and vehicle control and in each aspect built the logical foundation and viewpoints that we continue to use today in engineering Vehicle Dynamics. Maurcie Olley Maurice Olley transformed how automobiles are engineered by insisting that ride comfort, handling, and feel could be measured, modeled, and systematically improved without losing sight of the human experience. Working at General Motors in the early–mid 20th century, Olley laid the foundations of modern vehicle dynamics: quarter-car models, ride frequency targets, etc. His body of work marks the transition from intuition to repeatable engineering discipline, shaping everything from family sedans to high-performance vehicles. Nearly every modern suspension philosophy traces back to the problems Olley first framed.
