Compartmentalization & Protocells
Membranes turned chemistry into organized life
Early chemistry needed a way to concentrate molecules, protect reactions, and create an “inside” distinct from an “outside.” We explore how simple compartments including fatty-acid vesicles, coacervate droplets, mineral pores, and early membranes became the stage on which evolution could act. These protocells provided the scaffolding for growth, heredity, and competition.
